Root Canal Therapy
Severe cavities or cracks can lead to infections inside the tooth. Root canal therapy can help solve these infections by removing the pulp and nerve from within the tooth. This allows for the tooth to be cleaned- and the tooth to be saved. Without a root canal being performed, bacteria can continue to fester in the canal and even spread to the underlying bone- causing tooth loss or other infections.
Root canal therapy has a high success rate and allows for the tooth to remain for the rest of the patient's life in many cases. Prior to treatment, this same patient may be dealing with extreme tooth pain, high sensitivity to temperature change in the mouth, swollen gums and more. After treatment- the tooth, and the patient, will no longer be experiencing these issues.
What to Expect
Dr. Youngs will begin by making the patient comfortable. He will then make an opening in the tooth's crown so that he can access the pulp chamber. The open chamber will receive a thorough cleaning and any infected pulp will be removed. A filling or crown will be placed over the opening at the end of the cleaning. Sometimes root canal therapy can require several visits, and if that is the case, a temporary filling will be placed until the process is finalized. The final filling will look like and feel like your original tooth structure.
